JPG to DXF Converter: PNG and JPEG Drawings

Convert a JPG, JPEG or PNG drawing up to 2 MB into an editable DXF draft. Preview the result, check recovered text and geometry against the image, and calibrate the scale in CAD before continuing.

What does image-to-CAD conversion produce?

Images store pixels. The free tool attempts to recognize clear drawing text as editable CAD text, and fit regular strokes and dot sequences to lines, circles or arcs. Unresolved parts remain as polyline outlines; thick or intersecting strokes may still have double boundaries. Some labels and dimension numbers may remain outlines, and door curves may remain polylines rather than ARC entities. Review the results. Dimensional constraints and design semantics are not recovered automatically.

How to convert PNG, JPG or JPEG for free

Choose a clear, high-contrast 2D drawing up to 2 MB. Select it on the home page, confirm your drawing rights and the retention terms, then submit. Compare the original and actual output preview before downloading DXF. Failed jobs return the allowance.

Prepare a scan before converting it to CAD

  1. Lay the paper flat. Scan it square to the page, or keep the camera directly above it. A tilted photograph can distort lengths differently across the drawing.
  2. Crop away the desk and unrelated background while retaining the required geometry, dimension labels, dimension endpoints and drawing border needed for review.
  3. Rotate the image until the drawing is upright. Keep its original proportions; stretching the width or height changes the relationship between dimensions.
  4. Keep the clearest source version within the 2 MB limit. Avoid aggressive sharpening or black-and-white thresholding: thin lines can disappear and nearby strokes can merge.
  5. At full size, inspect the thinnest lines, intersections and dimension text. After conversion, compare those same locations with the preview and downloaded DXF. Keep the original for this check.

How to calibrate scale in CAD

PNG/JPG output uses source pixels, not millimetres. Choose a trustworthy dimension on the source and measure the corresponding length in your CAD software. Divide the real length by the measured length to find the scale factor. Check an independent known dimension along the other axis. If one uniform factor cannot match both, first check the selected endpoints and source proportions; capture a flatter scan if perspective or stretching remains. Do not force one dimension to fit and assume the whole drawing is accurate. Optional upload-scale calibration has rejected some tested images. If it fails, convert without it and calibrate the downloaded draft in CAD.

Conversion problem: what should I try next?

  1. Double boundaries around a thick line: compare them with the source. Outline tracing may follow both edges of the stroke. Review and remove redundant boundaries in CAD only after identifying the intended geometry; sharpening the image does not establish a correct centreline.
  2. Missing fine lines or merged intersections: inspect the source at full size. Return to a version without heavy sharpening or thresholding, or make a clearer flat scan before converting again. Check each affected location rather than assuming another conversion restored it.
  3. Labels remain outlines or contain uncertain characters: compare every important label with the original and correct it in CAD. Follow the drawing OCR guide below; editable text is not proof that the recognized value is correct.
  4. One dimension fits but the other axis does not: recheck endpoints, units and image proportions. If the source is distorted, recapture it square to the page instead of stretching the DXF to make one measurement fit.
  5. The original is a PDF: keep the PDF and use the selected-page PDF-to-DXF workflow rather than a screenshot. Follow the PDF guide below and review the actual output; PDF paper millimetres still need real-world scale calibration.

What should I check after conversion?

Inspect broken or duplicate boundaries, unclear numbers, editable text, dimensions and layers. Compare with the source and correct the DXF in CAD; an editable draft is not production acceptance evidence. For an interior floor plan, you can also start a separate Interior Editor Beta project using the original PNG, JPG or PDF. Converted DXF files cannot be imported into that editor yet.

Need SVG or image outlines instead?

Vector Lab accepts PNG and JPG images up to 5 MB and provides SVG paths and DXF outlines. You can upload, convert and preview as a guest; sign in to export. Choose it to inspect image boundaries and color regions. For an attempt at editable drawing text and fitted CAD geometry, use the drawing converter linked above.

The free tool accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG and PDF files up to 2 MB for guests or 2 MB for signed-in users, processing one selected PDF page per conversion. Guests get 1 conversion per IP per day; signed-in accounts get 3. Allowances reset at 00:00 China Standard Time (UTC+8); failed jobs return the allowance. Network abuse-prevention limits also apply.

Online source files, results and previews are deleted 30 minutes after task creation. Private review copies are deleted after 48 hours. Download and keep your own copy in time.
