DXF vs DWG: which CAD format to choose for your files
Compare the openness and compatibility of DXF and DWG, why image-to-CAD output uses DXF, and how to convert to other formats.
What is the difference between DXF and DWG?
Both store CAD drawing data, but DXF is an open text-based exchange format while DWG is AutoCAD's proprietary binary format. DXF is better for cross-software exchange and programmatic processing; DWG is more compact and native to AutoCAD.
Why does image-to-CAD output use DXF?
The free converter outputs DXF outlines so they open in AutoCAD, QCAD, LibreCAD, Fusion and similar tools. As an open format, DXF does not depend on a single vendor and works as a universal exchange format.
Can I convert DXF to DWG?
Yes. Open the DXF in AutoCAD or a compatible application and save it as DWG. Some applications and online services also convert between formats. Check that layers, units, text and precision survive the conversion and verify the export.
What else should I check when choosing a format?
Confirm the file version and unit system your target software supports, and verify dimensions, text, layers and arcs. DXF export does not restore design constraints or tolerances; calibrate scale against a known dimension and review before engineering use.
The free tool accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG and PDF files up to 1 MB, processing one selected PDF page per conversion. Guests get 1 conversion per IP per day; signed-in accounts get 3. Allowances reset at 00:00 China Standard Time (UTC+8); failed jobs return the allowance. Network abuse-prevention limits also apply.
Online source files, results and previews are deleted 30 minutes after task creation. Private review copies are deleted after 48 hours. Download and keep your own copy in time.
